Memories of policing in North Shields, Tynemouth & Cullercoats
New Local Book Launched: 'Offbeat' by Ken Banks

We were very proud to see Ken's book launched recently in front of a capacity audience in North Shields Central Library. Ken is one of our regular contributors and it was fitting that his recollections of life in the Tynemouth Borough Police have been extended to a wider audience through this book. The book isn't a history of policing in the local area but demonstrates the way in which the members of the force were an integral part of local society.

The book costs £4.99 to buy and is widely available - you can even buy it on line. If you need any more information about suppliers just get in touch via the contact page

November 2010

24th November - Volunteers from the project were delighted to attend the rededication of the pit wheel from Dudley Colliery today. The wheel was part of the original winding gear from the colliery, kept safe since its closure in 1977. It has now been relocated to the front of Shasun Pharma Solutions site where it can clearly be seen by local people.

Shasun hosted the rededication event and exhibition and children from Fordley Community Primary School entertained those attending with local songs before leading everyone out to the pit wheel in a lantern procession.

The wheel was blessed by Reverent Angela Maughan, Jayess Newbiggin Brass Band and Councillor Muriel Green formally unveiled the new commemorative plaque which stands alongside it.

Jayess Newbiggin Brass Band then played 'Gresford', the miners' hymn to bring a very moving event to a close.

We are delighted to have been given access to a substantial collection of local photographs taken by photographer Ernest Storey.

Ernest has spent many years recording places and events in the area and over the coming months we will be adding some of his images to the website.

He remembers one event particularly, the fire that destroyed the Plaza in Tynemouth in 1996, you can see one of Ernests images showing the scene as the fire was being extinguished below.  Look out for more of Ernest's photos soon.
